THE ISRAEL CONNECTION
The Israel Connection seeks to deepen our congregation’s commitment to and understanding of Progressive (Reform) Judaism in Israel. We have established relationships with three different progressive congregations offering numerous avenues for involvement:
YOZMA - “initiative” in Hebrew, is an acronym for “Judaism of our Time, Heritage of Our People.” Led by its founder, Rabbi Kinneret Shiryon, Israel’s first Reform female rabbi,
it is located in Modi’in, a growing town between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Or Hadash - “New Light” is described as the “synagogue/community with a heart.” Located in Haifa and led by Rabbi Edgar Nof, it is known for its work with Ethiopian and Russian immigrants, the disadvantaged, disabled and victims of terror.
Tzur Hadassah - located in the town with the same name, is a growing, lay-led congregation that is actively expanding its school program. Because of its small size, every effort counts. The connections involve personal contacts, exchanges of projects by religious school children, and modest gifts.
Our committee seeks to involve a variety of TBE congregants through varied educational efforts including speakers, films, and support of Israeli artisans and businesses. We are also beginning a new program to support victims of terror through personal connections.
